You know, you’re one confused person. I like reading your blog but what a conflicting list of trivia!

Yes, some might say I am a walking contadiction.

I see the libertarian in you coming out in #’s 3 and 16. This just makes me wonder all the more why the hell you would vote for Obama. Anyone who appreciates the individual and understands human nature should resist the political left. Tu ne cede malis sed contra audentior ito.

Okay, I have no idea about the last sentence you wrote, apparently Latin.

Like all of us voters, I chose the lesser of two evils. While I don’t necessarily consider Obama an evil, I hope he doesn’t move further toward socialism.

However, people in the U.S. are consistently dismissing scientific evidence of the destruction which unsavory environmental practices are having on our planet. Thus, there is no choice but legislation.

I think we all need to consider how we would feel if someone leveled a beautiful mountain top near our home (PA or WV) or dump harmful chemicals in our water supply (PA or WV) or ruined our way of living by allowing oil to pollute our homes and gardens (AK, Nigeria and Azerbaijan). But since we’re not, hopefully the governments of the world will.

Hopefully, you read my article about Lance Armstrong as well.

Tu ne cede malis sed contra audentior ito-translates into:

“do not give in to evil but proceed ever more boldly against it”

Regarding your scientific evidence, especially as it pertains to global warming, I suggest you dig deeper. Contrary to what the media wants you to think, the science is very much unsettled on the matter. Computer models are only as good as the data that goes into them and the biases and agendas of those inputing said data.

The other thing to keep in mind is that abuses from industry often happen where there is a monopoly brought about by the govt. interfering via excessive regulation or favorable legislation. That is not to say that there is no place for regulation. But, if you look at the environmental abuses that go on in places such as Nigeria or Azerbaijan you will find a few things are common. 1) it is not a truly free society and private property is not guaranteed 2) the business entities responsible for the abuses are essentially granted monopolies by corrupt governments. 3) these two factions work in usison soley for their own benefit. Natural rights such as life, liberty and property mean nothing to them and they are willing and able to abuse them for their own benefit. In a free society where there are private property rights, free flow of information and free enterprise these abuses are much less likely to happen because people have choice and are free to express their dissaproval in a number of ways. Abuses of any type are generally bad for business. So when there is competition business will often do the right thing even if it’s for purely selfish reasons. The absence of competition and liberty pretty much means they can do what they want free of any consequence.

As far as Obama moving towards socialism, well look around. It is happening right before our very eyes. True, the alternative was not much better. The difference essentially is that Bush and McCain are reluctant socialists. Obama, Pelosi, and Reid are not so reluctant in their socialist motivations. We have turned a corner for which we cannot go back without a major event. I fear for my country and the future it portends for my children. I do not toil and pray for my children only to see them left with a country that will have them be nameless, faceless, Godless, mindless wards of the state.

You know you and I agree that less government is better government in many ways as socialist governments remove accountability and that’s a bad thing.

I can’t agree with you on global warming. Although it is not necessarily the case, it seems intuitive, given that the earth has an atmosphere intended to retain heat in the middle of cold space, that if you burn decayed plant matter which has stored the energy of the sun over millions of years, and do this in a very short period of time, the earth will unnaturally warm. That’s without even trying to take into account elevated greenhouse gases.

As far as places like Nigeria and Azerbaijan and the governments which operate them. Your point is mine exactly, only coming from the other direction. However, instead of complaining about how those governments are inept, we take personal responsibility and remove their income and at the same time lower the amount of polution - we don’t buy their oil.

Like always, Wilky, a good discussion.

All that is missing from the discussion is beer and cigars and maybe a little BBQ.

  8. 09/02/2009

Totally agree. However, Pokerfest looks out of the question for me this year. The wife will be doing her CNA practicum and will need the car. Plus, I couldn’t possibly drive 10 hours by myself in a rental with my two hooligans in the back.

Don’t be a weeny. I agree that said drive would be painful but such sacrifices are sometimes necessary for such a worthy cause.

By the way, regarding your global warming position, I caution you on relying on intuition in place of reason and good science. Throughout history intuition has not always served us well i.e. the earth is flat, the sun revolves around the earth etc. The truth, especially as it pertains to the natural world, is not always so simple as to be intuitive. As it pertains to global warming I think we should want to be very certain because the policies intended to counter it will have devastating economic effects and will hurt the poor most of all while making many more of us poor as well. Knowing your are someone who is sincerely interested in intellectual and scientific honesty and integrity I would urge you to study the matter further. When you do you may be surprised at what you find.

  10. 10/02/2009

Like many republicans, I think you are conerned with the economy first, everything else second. I agree there are some policies to counteract global warming the are not necessarily the best, but at least someone is doing something. However, without a healthy environment, the very foundation upon which an economy is built, agriculture, suffers. No healthy environment = no healthy economy.

Irregardless of whether global warming is actually happening, that is not the premise of this website. And you cannot refute that the practices used to extract fossil fuels, regardless of how clean, are extremely damaging to the environment. You probably didn’t want the ethanol plant in Milford (more undesirably energy) and I’m sure you wouldn’t want someone leveling off a hill near Dewart Lake and allowing the runoff to kill everything in the lake. I would also caution you not to be so liberal. Since there is some question about whether global warming is happening, let’s be a little more conservative until we’re sure. By the way, if you aren’t sure about whether automobile exhaust is harmful to the environment, go sit in your garage with your car running and all of your doors shut. The thinking that somehow cars are not a major source of polution is laughable.

Furthermore, the premise of this website is to help build stronger people and stronger communities, something that all political parties hope to do. Cars have for the most part eliminated our interaction with the environment around us and our community. I want this to change.

What’s Jeremy’s e-mail? I think he needs to weigh in on this discussion.
